NUVU Focuses on High-Octane Ethanol Fuel at New Manistee District Gas Station

twp file. – NUVU Fuels opens its third Michigan location at the site of a former Kmart Big K Express gas station located along US 31 in Filer Township.

In August, NUVU Real Estate LLC received a $114,000 grant from the USDA to replace six on-site fuel dispensers. The funds were made available as part of the USDA’s High Mix Infrastructure Incentive Program aimed at expanding the availability of renewable biofuels.

As a Michigan ethanol producer, NUVU Fuels has focused on offering high-octane biofuel blends at its plants.

Growth Energy, an ethanol trade association, announced in 2019 that unleaded 88/E15 would be the standard blend available to customers at NUVU fuel locations.

NUVU Fuels is the first US retailer to raise its base fuel offering to 88 octane in addition to offering E30, E50, and E85 (and) EV charging, according to Twitter page.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency defines E15 as gasoline mixed with 10.5% to 15% ethanol. In 2011, the Environmental Protection Agency approved E15 for use in light vehicles of 2001 and newer model year.

E15 blends contain 5% more ethanol than E10, which is the most common fuel used in the United States according to the Iowa Renewable Fuel Association website. E15 is also higher in octane – usually 88 octane while E10 has an octane rating of 87.

Workers began work at the former Kmart gas station late last summer. NUVU Properties Manistee, LLC was formed on July 29, 2021, according to a profile on michigan-company.com.

A post shared on the NUVU Twitter page in September states that the new terminal will have outdoor spaces. Another post, shared to Instagram by NUVU Fuels president Mick Miller on September 27, shows an artist’s drawing of the Filer Township station. Miller could not be reached for comment on Friday afternoon.

Kmart opened the doors of its Filer Township location in June 1992. Kmart and the Big K Express terminal closed in September 2016.

Until recently, the identity of the new station’s ownership was a mystery to local officials.

At the October Filer Township DDA meeting, town supervisor Terry Walker reported that he learned indirectly about the sale.

“We’re the last to hear of anything like this,” Walker said. “The only reason we heard about it was because when they flew to the airport with their private jet to close the deal, one of the guys at the airport asked them…” What brings you guys to Manistee? “We just closed in Kmart yesterday,” they told him.

DDA Director Tamara Boswinka said she went through zoning permit application papers to find out who owns the property.

“Terry and I went through a number of these trying to find different names for different owners of different parts of the property, and frankly, this was not really the right person,” Boswinka said in October.

It’s not currently clear when the station will open, but DDA officials said that when completed, it will be the only gas station on this side of the road for about 11 miles, from Ertie’s Forest Trail in Freesoil to Wesco in Parkdale. town.
