Honeywell to provide integrated control and safety system solution for Spain’s first advanced biofuel plant

January 13, 2021 – Honeywell today announced that it has been selected by Repsol to supply an Integrated Control and Safety System (ICSS) for the first advanced biofuel production plant to be built in Spain. The new facility will use a variety of distributed control systems (DCS), emergency shutdown (ESD), fire and gas (F&G) and human-machine interface (HMI) solutions from Honeywell to achieve efficient, sustainable and low-emissions operations.

Last year, Repsol announced its strategy to become a net-zero company by 2050 and recently announced more ambitious goals that will accelerate its transformation. The company’s biofuel plant located in the Cartagena refinery, Spain, will have an annual production capacity of 250,000 tons of hydrodiesel, biojet fuel, bionaphtha and biopropane. The plant will also produce advanced biofuels from recycled raw materials for use in road transport and aviation. These advanced biofuels will make it easier to reduce CO22 Emissions 900,000 tons per year.

“Through this initiative, we at Repsol are decisively promoting a new technology path that will be key on our path towards carbon neutrality. This initiative will be integrated into projects we have already implemented in energy efficiency, low-emission electricity generation, green hydrogen, circular economy and synthetic fuels. CO2 capture, use, storage and more,” stated Gozo John Emaze, CEO of Repsol.

“We are committed to helping renewable energy producers through key initiatives aimed at achieving a better environment and a more sustainable world,” said Ujjwal Kumar, President and CEO of Honeywell Process Solutions. “Honeywell helps customers achieve their automation and asset lifecycle goals, providing a robust solution for every new project that integrates seamlessly with an existing installed base and expands capabilities to improve overall performance.”

Honeywell’s ICSS solution will include the Enhanced High Performance Operations Manager (EHPM), a process-connected device on the Enhanced Global Control Network (EUCN) that provides operations control and organizational hierarchy; Safety Manager SC, a modular fault-tolerant safety system that integrates all safety operations, including F&G and ESD functions; and the Experion® Orion Console, an advanced HMI that enables faster operator response, reduced fatigue, and increased situational awareness. Honeywell will also provide engineering, design, configuration, testing, installation and commissioning services on the project.
